Dresdners started baking Christstollen in the 15th century when Pope Innocent VIII decided to allow Dresden bakers to use a wider range of ingredients in their recipes. For the first time, bakers in Dresden were able to bake using richer ingredients like milk, butter, and marzipan. They took full advantage of this freedom and started baking the first loaves of Christstollen as we know it today, now with sweet candied fruits, savory almonds, and dense rich bread that was able to captivate an entire kingdom. Dresdners fell so deeply in love with the bread that even the king would eagerly await his yearly Christstollen. King Augustus the Strong even commissioned one so large that it ended up weighing a massive 1.8 tons, earning Augustus his place on the official sealed box that is used to package every loaf.
